Thanksgiving Thoughts

by Phyllis Leavitt | Jan 7, 2026 | #Psyche&Soul, Blogs

I wanted to write something about gratitude for Thanksgiving, but nothing came to mind that felt powerful enough. Without question, I am beyond grateful for all I now have, and especially as I get older, I am even more aware of how fortunate I am in this world where far too many people have far too little. And some have almost nothing beyond their next breath. And I can’t help but know that.

In the face of that knowing, gratitude doesn’t seem like a big enough offering. What finally came to mind was prayer. I have not focused on prayer so much as I have concentrated on trying to heal my wounds, be a more loving person, do my best to raise my consciousness, and follow the guidance of my soul about what I came here to do in the life– even when following guidance has put me up against my greatest resistance and fears.

But today Prayer feels like the thing. At a very pivotal moment in my own journey, when I felt myself at a complete impasse, I spontaneously found myself in a deep state of prayer, and I was answered. My world has never been the same since. (You can read all about that in my first two books– A Light in the Darkness and Into the Fire).

I believe, as a result, that there is a definite Call and Response mechanism in the universe. The response may not be in the form I think it should be and it may not happen in the time frame I want, but my life has shown me that the response is coming if I keep walking the road before me and don’t give up.

And so my Prayer this Thanksgiving is this:

That we walk this road together and don’t give up

No matter how hopeless it may seem

At any given moment that we can

Create a world that is safe and loving for all people.

That we know that Love is the answer

Love is the only answer

It may be buried under ideologies and power struggles

Guns and bombs and a tsunami of injustice,

But Love is born into every heart

Yours and mine and the tyrant’s and the killer’s

And our sacred mission here is to unearth it

In our own lives, and spread it like seed

For those waiting to receive it

And even those who are not.

My prayer is that we now choose to be a part of that Call and Response mechanism. That we make the Call for Love and what Love makes possible, that we believe a Response is coming, and that we ourselves answer that Call and become the Response we are praying for.

I found this quote in a recent Medium Magazine article by Rami Dhanoa, entitled, “The Single Sentence Buddha Kept Repeating When He Taught Mindfulness.”

To pursue mindfulness more intensely means to be ready for all the impurity that might come up as a result of it.

I don’t know if Buddha actually said this or not, but what I do know is that in a true growth process, we will inevitably be confronted with all our less-than-wonderful qualities and behaviors– not for blame and shame but in order to heal them

Breaking But Not Broken

Breaking But Not Broken

Jan 5, 2026 | #Psyche&Soul, Blogs

Many years ago, I read an unforgettable story. In the rubble of a Nazi concentration camp, the body of a man was found with one hand still clutching a crumpled piece of paper on which he had scribbled these words, “Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do.” This man did not succumb to hate even in the worst hour of persecution. He died with loving compassion and forgiveness for his tormentors.
