I didn’t include a chapter about the masculine and feminine divide in America in Therapy. I didn’t write about the patriarchy or feminism or the urgent need for a reunion of the masculine and feminine energies within ourselves and in our culture and politics. I didn’t address that topic when I talked about what hurts us most and what helps us heal… not because I didn’t want to, but because I felt the topic is way too big for the book I wrote.

Perhaps it was the build up to this last election that pushed me over some edge in myself, or perhaps it is also part of the natural flow of human evolution, but I have a stronger desire than ever to allow my fullest self-expression before I leave this life. I wonder if you feel that, too– like– isn’t it time to go all out with who we are?

I have always had a sense of hope associated with the New Year – a chance to start over, get re-inspired, commit to something new. Yet the sobering backdrop of what is unfolding here in America and around the world is frightening as I try to focus on my own life, the contributions I want to make and relationships I want to foster and grow

During one of the most recent hurricanes, a flock of birds was seen flying in the eye of the storm. This image has stayed with me as a metaphor of how I can navigate the impending whirlwind of changes about to unfold in the governance of our country.

This is a big day for America and the rest of the world. I think about my book, America in Therapy, and how far away we seem to be from embodying a politics based in a commitment to love and safe belonging for everyone, even as I know there are millions of people who do their very best to create a spirit of peace, inclusion and cooperation.
