We had the most bizarre experience on our way to Colorado this last week. It still defies logical explanation… and that may be the beauty of it.
We were pulling our camper with our new truck along the highway when, out of nowhere, there was a huge roaring sound and a terrific blast of energy— unlike anything I have ever heard or felt— slamming into the driver’s side of the truck, knocking us over toward the shoulder of the road. My husband yelled out, “I have no brakes!” as he then desperately tried to downshift to stop the truck, to no avail.
And then just as suddenly, we found ourselves at a full stop anyway by the side of the road, hearts pounding and terrified.
I’m talking about our new truck that replaced the one that blew up on our ill-fated trip to Utah not long ago. This truck has a very sophisticated computer system. The dashboard beeps constantly, updating us about what’s happening with our blind spot indicator, the trailer hookup, our tires, and driver assist. So as soon as we stopped, I looked at the dashboard, sure I would see red lights flashing and messages about a blowout, engine or transmission failure, or worse…
But there was nothing.
It showed the same benign messages as before, as if nothing had happened, as if we had been sucked into another dimension and shot right back out, without the truck’s computer system registering a thing.
We sat there in shock. But I also sensed that we were okay or the dashboard would have told us something, anything. And so, just as strangely, when we finally dared to get back on the road, the truck was perfectly fine.
Nothing wrong… all systems Go.
I guess we will never know what happened. If it was a dust devil that hit us (the only possible explanation we could think of), we saw no dust. But even that would not explain the roaring boom we heard, the complete mechanical failure of the truck, or its return to full functioning only moments later.
And it has been fine ever since.

I have not been able to get this incident out of my mind. It simply cannot be explained by ordinary means. I called the Ford service department to see what they thought, and when they researched our Vin number, they found that 7 system failure codes had registered the day of the incident, but they had no explanation for what had happened or why the truck returned to normal.
So I turned within and asked if there could be a message for us
What came to me is this: that just as much as we are being slammed by terrible forces of hatred and violence here at home and around the world, just as much as it is unnerving, destabilizing, and terrifying to say the least, there are also forces of protection that are just as strong if we look for them, support and empower them, and most importantly, if we begin to embody them ourselves.
Much of the human race and the powers-that-be today are slamming headlong into our most caring, cooperative, and peaceful instincts, beliefs, and institutions, and their inability or unwillingness to acknowledge that they hold the fate of humanity in their hands is truly terrifying.
My husband and I could have died in a fiery wreck from what happened to us… yet we didn’t. Some equally powerful, miraculous force rescued us. I believe our story is one of many urgent calls for us to do everything in our power to slam on the brakes of our most lethal impulses, until enough of us can stop this runaway madness.
Can we come together and steer ourselves toward peace and reconciliation, recalibrate the human engine, and proceed — not so much with caution but with Care?
