Standing on the Cross of the World
I am 78 and the issue of my own mortality becomes more unavoidable every day. I feel much younger than my age might imply, even ageless at times. Yet, as I move inexorably toward the death of Phyllis, I am deeply aware that in our human forms, our lives are both vitally important and will also vanish in an instant. We are a fleeting speck in time on this Earth, a drawing in the sand that will be washed away, and equally true, what we do here matters tremendously. This is a paradox that I have been learning to live with– that we make our brief appearances with all our struggles, accomplishments, loves, joys, sorrows, and moments of transcendence… and then we pass away.
.
What we have is the precious opportunity to participate in the evolution of human consciousness, and now, more than ever, that evolution is critical to the actual continuation of life as we know it.
What do I mean by the evolution of human consciousness? If we look at the evolution of countless life forms over millions of years, very simply the evolution of form has been about survival. Plants and animals that have adapted quickly and effectively to the environment, and especially to changes in the environment and threats from the environment, have survived best. Those who cannot adapt have become extinct.
In today’s world, it is not our bodily forms that need to evolve further. It is the consciousness we are living in that is the main threat to our survival. With our belief in war and the Weapons of Mass Destruction that we imagine will help some of us survive better or longer, we ourselves have created the environment that threatens our continued existence.
This consciousness, which advocates hatred, exploitation, and violence, is obsolete. And our evolution into a new consciousness is the only adaptation that can ensure our survival and thrival. It involves growing new mental/emotional/behavioral/spiritual capacities individually and collectively that will have us treat one another as equally worthy of peace, safety, love, care, belonging, and being provided for. It’s not rocket science. We don’t need PHDs to understand this. It’s what we all want in our own lives and suffer greatly from when we don’t get it.
We are the only species that has created the threats to its own survival and therefore, unlike other species, we must choose to evolve, stand up together and walk on two legs out of the wilderness we have created.
Even with the awareness of my very small place in time and space and my growing sense of mortality in the body of Phyllis, I feel an urgency to participate as never before. So while I’m not dying tomorrow of anything I’m aware of, I am dying to the illusion that human life on this planet will just go on without deliberate intervention.
I am awakening to the need for Love everywhere and in everything. We are all playing parts in this human drama and now, perhaps more than any other time in human history, we are being asked to choose the parts that are life-sustaining if we care about a future for our children and humanity.
I hope and pray we are all stumbling our way toward this new consciousness– knowingly or not.
I hope and pray our most basic instinct for survival will kick in on a global level before it is too late.
It’s hard not to become overwhelmed by hopelessness, fear and denial. For me it requires facing the painful truths of the entire human race, not just my own. It requires being willing to participate in a transformation process that is global, no matter how large or small the personal arena is in which I play my part… because when the boat is sinking, every drop of water we each throw overboard counts.
I remind myself that love is the answer and that the very challenging issues and obstacles in the way of creating a safe and welcoming world for all people can become the motivation to evolve out of the consciousness that is killing more and more people before our very eyes every day.
Holding this deep in my heart in the face of unfathomable human suffering, is part of the dying I feel. But it is dying that signals resurrection. We are standing on the Cross of the World. Let’s stand together with our eyes open, without fear, regret or sense of separation, but with deep Compassion for ALL and EVERYTHING, while we continue to play our parts… one day, one moment, one loving action and word at a time.
