Holding Onto Hope: This Isn’t The Time To Give Up (It’s Never The Time!)
Someone asked me if I have hope in these very scary and uncertain times. I didn’t hesitate to say yes, though a small part of me wondered at my response. But yes, I do have hope. Why? Because I believe human beings are essentially good, because I know we all come into this world wired for love and connection, because there are far more acts of loving kindness, generosity, selflessness, and goodwill than reach the news, and because we are biologically, if not psychologically, wired to survive, not destroy ourselves.
That said, I also know many people seriously wonder if we will make it here, and I have days like that, too.
But sitting in the beautiful woods that surround our home this morning, I was thinking about the floods here in America and the volcanoes erupting around the globe– and I thought of what many people now say– that the earth is unleashing her anger at what we humans are doing. But I don’t believe that. I think the earth is a body that can become symptomatic like our own, and that it is simply trying to heal itself of harm, just like our bodies try to heal themselves of infection, disease or injury.
We are unique among all living things on this planet in that we have decision-making power in regard to how we behave toward one another and the earth. Recognizing that we have become a danger to the viability of so many life forms, I wondered what the earth’s consciousness might be in regard to our actions within her body, and what messages she might be sending us (like the body alerts us with pain), not as retribution but as a wake-up call– SO THAT WE CAN MAKE THE CHOICE TO PARTICIPATE IN HEALING.
I know that my message in America in Therapy, and everything I so desperately want to contribute to a loving and sustainable way of life for all people– I know my one voice is very small, maybe imperceptible, within the thunderous roar of violence and cruelty that is trying so hard to pass for righteousness, and often not even trying to disguise itself at all.
Sitting in the woods under the towering ponerosas that bless this land, I understood that what I have– what we all have, is an opportunity– the very blessed opportunity to participate in our own healing– individually and collectively. Like the white blood cells in our body fight infection, no one white blood cell is the hero or the savior, but en masse they have the power to interrupt the death spiral of infection and potential for our demise.
So this isn’t the time to give up, not now when humanity is in the throes of perhaps its worst infectious disease, pandemic, ever— this as-yet-untreated virus of hatred and greed that attacks both ourselves and the earth, and flourishes in the petri dish of our severely compromised collective mental health.
Finding our way back to love and connection is the real cure and our only hope. I know this without any doubt from all my years on this earth. Love and connection saved me, and I have never known or worked with anyone for whom this was not true.
We have the tools to heal. They are not beyond our reach. We can mobilize ourselves as the white blood cells in the body of the human race.
For me that means I will continue to have my one small voice and message of healing…
What will it be for you?
